Bath Community Gospel Choir sings blessings to the city this Christmas in aid of Genesis

Bath’s very own gospel choir is releasing a brand-new song just in time for Christmas for everyone to hear, from Bath to beyond. Shine On has been written by gospel stars, Geraldine Latty and Carey Luce and BCGC Musical Director Jo Sercombe with the aim of lifting the spirits of the city and blessing its population this Christmas. The song will premiere on Facebook and YouTube on 17 December 2020. With each viewing, BCGC are suggesting contributions to Bath’s Genesis Trust.

Over 30 members of Bath Community Gospel Choir rehearsed and recorded the song from home and the final piece has been edited by Telling Video into an uplifting video to be shared far and wide. As well as a beautiful melody and catchy chorus, three spoken word pieces with the track were contributed by the choir’s own members, based on their experiences of 2020 and the importance of community and hope in these challenges times.

“BCGC has been meeting for weekly rehearsals for 15 years and Christmas is one of our busiest times for concerts,” says Musical Director, Jo Sercombe. “This year has been a real blow to our sense of community so to be able to work on this project together via Zoom has been a wonderful adventure. Also, blessing our own city at such a difficult time has been a real focus.”

The choir has performed in concert with gospel singer and songwriter Geraldine Latty, originally from Bristol, at Bath’s Roper Theatre and Bristol’s Victoria Rooms in recent times and it was a fantastic opportunity to work on this project together. Following a Zoom workshop with Geraldine, the choir rehearsed the song at weekly virtual sessions, learning the composition as it evolved into its final format until they were ready to record the audio and video elements from home, with coaching by Telling Video. The finished, edited piece shows the members singing the uplifting song together, despite the distance.

Lyrics include:

If ever there was a day, if ever there was a moment

For Heaven right here on Earth

Show us the light today, we know God is with us

Because of the Saviour’s birth

Shine on, shine on, bring life, bring hope

Shine on, shine on, bring peace, and joy

Shine on, shine on, bring love, bring truth.
