Twerton Lib Dem Councillors, Sarah Moore and Tim Ball, are welcoming plans to provide a safer parking area for residents in Freeview Road, with work due to begin early in the New Year.
Sarah and Tim secured the funding for these improvements in 2018, but works were not scheduled by the previous administration.
The scheme will see the existing inset parking areas extended to provide additional spaces at a right angle to the road. The works are due to start on 4 January 2021.
Explaining the proposals, Councillor Sarah Moore said:
“Inappropriate parking on the grass verges in Freeview Road has been a problem for years.
“Parking is already difficult for residents, but the problem is made worse by people coming to the area to visit Innox Park or the football club.
“Vehicles are left on the grassed areas, which get churned up to mud, especially in winter. It looks a mess and creates a slip hazard for residents, some of whom are elderly.
“Creating safer and more appropriate parking spaces is one of the key issues that residents asked us to look at as ward Councillors.
“We’ve been working with the Council’s Highways department to find the most appropriate solution. Whilst extending the parking will mean a small loss of grassed areas, we have ensured that the street trees here will be preserved and we feel this is the best option in this case.
“Whilst works are being carried out this area of the road will also be resurfaced. This is particularly welcome as the road is currently in a very poor state of repair, with patches and potholes.
“We have been working to find a solution to this issue for residents for some time now, so I’m delighted that works are due to start in the New Year.”
During the works, parking restrictions will be in place with sections of parking closed off according to the phase of works. In an attempt to minimise disruption, each area will be coned 48 hours before works, allowing the use of parking when works are not active (evenings and weekends). However, one area will remain fenced off for the duration of the works for storage of materials.
