BA1 Radio launches new show about Bath, celebrates their annual fundraising week and congratulate volunteer on award win!
It’s been a challenging year for many and here at BA1 Radio we’ve been committed to ensuring that our volunteers have been able to continue their great work with us and keep Bath informed and entertained during this time.
So what is it that we do?
At BA1 Radio we train and educate people of all ages in radio broadcasting to help them gain new skills. These skills help them with future employment, confidence and communication.
Covering local news stories and events, we provide a unique radio experience for listeners and volunteers. We currently have a team of 40 volunteers keen to learn more about radio, giving them the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of radio broadcasting.
What’s happened during lockdown?
Our studio closed its doors in March and we worked hard to get our volunteers set up to record radio from home. We went from 12 hours of live shows on a Saturday, to 12 hours of shows every weekday.
During the first three weeks of the new shows, we saw listener numbers quadruple and unique listener figures rise by 200%. Our shows include a Business Support program with James Godman, The Daily Good with Sarah Baker, Creative Champions with Luke Taylor, Parenthood Show with Lena Korallo and the Dad and Lad hour with father and son duo, Ian and Reuben Spence.

We received £350 in donations when we released this video in May, which helped us towards COVID securing the studio ready for volunteers to return. Our doors are now back open and we are ready to deliver our training safely back in the studio!
BA1 Radio’s new show ‘Our City’ is a daily programme, all about championing the brilliant people, charities, and organisations of Bath. Featuring segments about some of our favourite places to visit in Bath, as well as local news stories, this show has a little something for everyone. Whether you are looking for a new café or restaurant to try out, a new walk or park to visit, or an event or activity to do with family and friends, Our City has some great suggestions.
Listen between 1 and 2pm Monday to Friday or listen back at 8pm the same day.
New Volunteers and Training
During lockdown we have continued to deliver our training remotely and inducted ten new volunteers. We’re excited to have them on board!

Not only have we supported hundreds of local businesses, charities and organisations through our shows, but we have produced jingles to help signpost listeners to support. These include BANES 3SG, Mentoring Plus, Julian House and Oasis Hub.
Bath Spa Internship
We were delighted to welcome Amelia Horner to the team in July to redesign our Brand Guidelines. Amelia, currently studying Graphic Design at Bath Spa University, had the opportunity to take on an internship through her course and we are so pleased with the results! Check them out here.

Fundraising Week 2020
Although a little different this year, our fundraising week was a success!
Our events included a virtual quiz night, baking delivery day, bake sale, 24-hour radio show, 16 mile walk around Bath and the creation of the BA1 Mockumentary which has featured on BBC Upload and BBC Radio Bristol.
We raised £1600 towards next years’ running costs but still need a little more help to reach our £3000 target. If you can support us, please donate here.
Hard work has been rewarded!
BA1 Radio was highly commended at the Bath Life Awards back in February and during lockdown we were named by the Bath Business Exchange as one of the top seven local organisations making a positive and inspirational change in Bath. We have also been nominated at the Creative Bath Awards!
Our very own Luke Nix, Station Manager and Trustee has also been recognised as the Young Volunteer of the Year at the Banes Community Awards. James Carlin from Banes 3SG presented the award virtually with Sara Dixon, saying that ‘the panel were looking for someone with compassion, enthusiasm, dedication and positivity and a role model to other young people. There was no doubt in the judges mind that Luke’s work had to be recognised.’

Luke, who at the time was taking a much needed few days off from work on a fishing trip, said ‘I don’t know if I’m looking the part in my camouflage, but, we’re passionate about what we’re doing here and trying to make a difference. Thanks so much for the award.’
Until next time…
